As your new Chairman I would like to take this opportunity on your behalf to thank the new Committee members for putting themselves forward and being duly elected once again. Their experience and enthusiasm is a great asset to the Society. I will rely on them especially, as I am new to the Committee as well as to my role.
I would also like to thank Brian McEvoy, our outgoing Chairman, for all his dedication to the wellbeing of our Society over the last three years. He has provided meticulous and energetic leadership. He has also shown his vast enthusiasm by attending most of our events including overseas tours. I only hope I can follow in his footsteps. Thanks also to Brian’s wife Jill for her ready support.
The AGM in September approved a significant rule change. The Society will now be known as The Arts Society Limpsfield. The Committee had carefully considered and debated various options for a new title, given a general acceptance that there was room for improvement on ‘LDFAS’. One of the expected benefits is that prospective new members will understand our title better. We shall review the change in the light of experience over the coming year.
I greatly enjoyed listening to Dr Nicholas Watkins’ talk in October on Horses and Modern Art. As one of those people who can’t normally muster much interest in horses, it was fascinating to be reminded of the place horses had in everyone’s lives prior to the motor car era, and of how much they have featured in great artworks from Stubbs to Picasso.
No doubt this will be a busy year for me but I am looking forward greatly to it.
Frank Myers, Chairman
